West Palm Beach Honors José Martí and the Power of Community

What started as neighbors standing up for a historic park turned into something much bigger—a reminder of what happens when a community comes together and refuses to let its history be erased.

In January 2025, residents formed the José Martí Cultural Committee with one simple goal: protect José Martí Park in West Palm Beach after plans emerged to turn it into a dog park. For many of us, this park represents more than green space. It represents memory, culture, and identity.

That effort brought together a diverse group of people—Cubans, Puerto Ricans, Nicaraguans, and Americans—who shared the belief that our history matters. Two years later, the outcome speaks for itself. The park was preserved, restored, and once again serves as a meaningful gathering place for the community.

On Wednesday, January 28, the Latino community will come together for the second year in a row to honor the birth of José Martí, the Apostle of Cuban Independence, with a civic ceremony at the park that bears his name. During the event, the City of West Palm Beach will officially proclaim January 28, 2026 as José Martí Day, recognizing both Martí’s legacy and the community members who worked tirelessly to protect this space.

This moment is about more than one park or one proclamation. It’s about civic pride, participation, and passing down our history to the next generation. José Martí Park stands today as a symbol of unity and a reminder that when people show up, their voices matter.

I encourage everyone, including Latino families, neighbors, and friends across our community, to attend, reflect, and stand in support of the culture and history that helped shape South Florida.
